How to leave a gift in your Will

STEP 1

Contact a solicitor

A solicitor will make sure that your wishes will be carried out as you intend. The Law Society can help you find one in your area.

STEP 2

Chose the type of gift you would like to leave

Leave a share of your assets
Many people leave us a percentage of what is left of their assets – known as their ‘estate’-after they ensure that their family and loved ones have been taken care of. This type of gift is known as a residuary gift and is easy to add to an existing Will without interfering with any specific sums you have left to family or friends. It also has the advantage that it will not be eroded in value by inflation over the years.

Leave a fixed sum of money
You may wish to leave us a stated sum of money. This kind of gift is known as a pecuniary gift.

Leave a specific item of value
You may wish to leave us a particular item (known as a specific bequest), which can be sold to support our work. It could be a property or an item of value such as an antique or a piece of jewellery. If you are considering leaving us a specific item, please email us on giftsinwills@chesterfield-rspca.org.uk to discuss this further.

STEP 3

Write or update your Will

We recommend you consult a solicitor who can advise on the wording of your Will to ensure that your wishes are carried out exactly as you want them to be.

To leave a gift to the RSPCA Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Branch, you’ll need to include our charity details:

RSPCA Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Branch CIO, 137, Spital Lane, Chesterfield, Derbyshire S41 0HL. Registered Charity Number 1209394.

An example of wording you could use:

“I give [the sum of £X/all (or X% share of) the residue of my estate] to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Branch CIO (Registered Charity Number: 1209394), 137 Spital Lane, Chesterfield, S41 0HL for its general charitable purposes and I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or duly authorised officer shall be a valid and appropriate form of discharge.”

STEP 4

Appoint your executor

The executor will be responsible for carrying out the instructions in your Will. This can be a friend, relative, or your solicitor.
