15th August 2025

We have an exciting development for the RSPCA Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Branch to tell you about. On 13th August 2025 we became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), which offers some important benefits for our charity and its future.

What is a CIO?

A CIO is a legal structure specifically designed for charities like us. It is regulated and approved by the Charity Commission for England and Wales.

Why have we made this change?

Under our previous structure our charity had no separate legal identity of its own. Becoming a CIO simplifies our administration and offers greater legal protection for our volunteer trustees. This change has been recommended to all RSPCA branches by the national RSPCA and we have been supported by them throughout the process.

What does this mean for the charity?

A CIO offers a more efficient and modern governance framework that is well-equipped to meet the needs of those we serve. We can dedicate more time and resources to delivering our charitable purposes by recruiting trustees who will no longer have the risk of personal financial liability for the organisation.

Our full official name is Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Branch CIO and we have a new charity number, which is 1209394.

What does this mean for you?

Your ongoing support remains crucial, and there will be no changes to how we engage with you or our animal welfare work.

The way we hold your personal information will be exactly the same as always, still following all of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) requirements. We have updated our privacy notice with our CIO details.

The CIO has a new bank account, so if you donate to us regularly by standing order, we will contact you in due course to make arrangements to enable you to start paying your donations to our new account. Please feel free to get in touch with us to ensure we have your up-to-date contact details. In the meantime don’t worry, our old bank account will continue to operate so we will still receive your donations. Any donations we receive by Direct Debit or bank card will be switched over by us automatically to the new account so no action will be needed by you.

If you are one of our branch members, your membership is not affected and transferred automatically to the CIO on 13th August 2025. All future renewals will carry on as usual.

Any questions?

We understand you may have questions about this change. You’re welcome to contact us at supportercare@chesterfield-rspca.org.uk if you would like to know more.

Thank you for being part of RSPCA Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Branch and we look forward to the future as we continue to work together to help animals in need.
