Make a lasting difference

Leaving a gift in your Will to the RSPCA Chesterfield & North Derbyshire Branch will create a wonderful legacy to help build a brighter future for local animals in need.

The RSPCA Chesterfield Animal Centre is currently embarking on a landmark rebuild project to create a modern facility based on the latest best practices in animal welfare, which will care for around 1,000 animals each year.

In 2015, the first phase of the project was completed providing a new rabbit house with 12 spacious pens to accommodate up 24 rabbits.

The next phase of the project is currently underway and will be completed in 2019 creating new dog kennels, cat pens and a dedicated unit for puppies.

Animal care manager, Gary Taylor, said: “This is a major step forward for animal welfare in the Chesterfield and North Derbyshire area and it makes us proud to know that the new facilities will provide a safe haven for animals in need for many years to come.”

Chesterfield RSPCA branch manager, Rachel Gray and animal care manager Gary Taylor chat with site manager, Karl Wilson, at the site of their new building which has got underway at their Spital Lane centre.

Gifts in Wills have provided the majority of funds for the redevelopment of the Chesterfield Animal Centre. However, further support is still needed to enable all phases of the work required to be delivered and to see our entire vision for the future of the animal centre brought to life. This is just one way in which gifts in Wills can provide a lasting legacy.

Leaving a legacy

How to leave a gift in your Will

There are a number of different ways you can remember the RSPCA Chesterfield & North Derbyshire Branch in your Will, depending on your circumstances. It doesn’t have to be a large amount, because every penny makes a real difference.

Even if you feel your Will is straightforward, we recommend you consult a professional adviser, such as a solicitor who can advise on wording to ensure that your wishes are carried out exactly as you want them to be.

As a Branch of the RSPCA we are a separately registered charity to the National RSPCA. Should you wish to leave a gift in your Will to the RSPCA Chesterfield & North Derbyshire Branch, it is important our charity is correctly identified in your Will.  Our charity’s details to include in your Will are:

Types of gifts in Wills

There are three main types of gifts you can leave to us in your Will. We suggest you speak to your legal adviser to help you make the decision that’s right for you. Every gift makes a difference to the animals who need us and we want you to leave the right gift for your circumstances.

Leave a share of your assets

Many people leave us a percentage of what is left of their assets – known as their ‘estate’ after they ensure that their family and loved ones have been taken care of.

This type of gift is known as a residuary gift and is easy to add to an existing Will without interfering with any specific sums you have left to family or friends. It also has the advantage that it will not be eroded in value by inflation over the year.

Leave a fixed sum of money

You may wish to leave us a stated sum of money. This kind of gift is known as a pecuniary gift.

Leave a specific item of value

You may wish to leave us a particular item (known as a specific bequest), which can be sold to support our work. It could be property or an item of value such as an antique or a piece of jewellery. If you are considering leaving us a specific item, please call us on 01246 273358 to discuss this further.

Changing your Will

The easiest way to make a change to your Will is to use a Codicil (an additional instruction that you can add to your existing Will). A solicitor will be able to advise you of the best way to do this, depending on your circumstances.

Suggested wording for your gift

If you would like to leave a gift in your Will to our animals, we recommend you consult a solicitor who can advise on wording to ensure that your wishes are carried out exactly as you want them to be.

Here is some suggested wording in order to include the RSPCA Chesterfield & North Derbyshire Branch in your Will:

“I give the sum of £ ___ (or specify percentage of estate) to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Chesterfield & North Derbyshire Branch (registered charity number 226142) and I declare that the receipt of the honorary treasurer or other proper officer of the said Branch shall be a full and sufficient discharge for the said legacy. In the event the aforesaid Branch shall no longer exist at the date of my death I give the legacy to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Wilberforce Way Southwater Horsham RH13 9RS (registered charity number 219099) for its general purposes.”
